"This publication takes a proactive, comprehensive, and developmental approach for having 'careers work' embedded into the general fabric of educational institutions, such as schools, colleges, and universities. Careers work is an all-encompassing umbrella term that includes providing individual assistance, industry visits, guest speakers, programs, and work experience for young people. This book takes a practical approach that focuses more on facilitating student career development and self-reliance rather than on providing career information, advice, and guidance. The book aims to assist educators of young people to effectively manage their careerrelated thoughts and actions in a practical way, particularly at critical course- and careerdecision junctions in their education. To meet this aim, we provide a framework for career education and development (CED) as it applies to young people. We outline the importance and relevance of CED not only to young people, but also to their families, educators, employers, and the nation. Case studies and details of how CED might be approached and introduced into educational settings are also provided. This book also clarifies terms such as career advice, career counselling, and career education, and achieves consistency of thought in the concepts related to multifaceted career development. The curriculum framework proposed in this publication takes its lead from a relatively simple career planning model, where students rehearse the key work-related skills and actions they will need throughout their lives."--Page vii.
