Toegye Yi HwangHow can humans embody the natural good nature in reality? This was the topic of Toegye. Toegye saw the pure moral sentiment of Satan as a ray of light that penetrates the dark world. Thus, a precise theoretical system was established to establish the metaphysical ground of Satan. The debate with Expectations, called “Sadan Chiljeongs argument,” laid the foundation for Chinas runnerology to be defined as Chosun Confucianism. Together with Toegye, Yulgok, which forms a double wall, started from criticism of Toegye. However, it is difficult to see Toegye as an idealist who focuses on metaphysical arguments. As a competent bureaucrat and elder, he devoted his power to correcting the sovereigns mind and to achieving correct politics. Sung Hak Dokdo and Limited Slaughterhouse are the writings that revealed the aspect of Toegye as a practicing intelligence. Through these writings, we can meet Toegye, a great scholar and a practicing politician.
