Excerpt from State Service Donations in Budgetary Shutdown: Hearing Before the Committee on Resources, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session Last month's partial government shutdown effectively closed down the entire National Park System and National Wildlife Ref uge System. In the process, it locked out thousands of park visitors and hunters, fishermen and bird watchers seeking to enjoy their national parks and wild refuges. The economy of my State was greatly impacted by the closure of Grand Canyon National Park and other park units. As a result, Governor Fife Symington, who will testify in several minutes, made a common sense proposal which would have allowed Grand Canyon National Park to operate during the shutdown down with State employees. Unfortunately, this proposal was rejected by the Inte rior Department so visitors from around the world and across the Nation who came to see the grandeur were locked out.
