This book analyzes the conditions of transition in Burma and offers a set of policy options that can be considered for mitigating negative social consequences int he course of implementing market reforms during her transition to democracy. The individual chapters emphasize the need to go beyond the assessment of growth-oriented liberalization strategies, and stress the importance of entitlements, capabilities and rights of stakeholders in promoting economic security during the transition. The contributors of this book argue vigorously that process of economic reforms is driven by complex political forces and that it is not enough to look at economic factors in isolation. They provide analyses on key processes that are critical to shaping policies for socially responsible development in Burma.
