From the preface: "I was first introduced to the practice of exclusive Psalmody over 30 years ago. In light of Paul's exhortation to sing 'psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, ' I quite naturally thought that singing Psalms "only was nothing more than a tradition. But I was soon to be told that those three words of Paul were nothing more than titles for differing parts of the Psalter. I was unconvinced, for the simple reason that I found no support for this idea in the Bible that I was using....It is not my desire to stir up strife, although I realize that such a hope may well be just a little naive. Rather, it is my wish to show that those of us who love to sing the hymns can do so with a clear conscience, because we believe that Scripture directs us to do so."
