
Excerpt from Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Annual Reports: For the Year 1909 The Massachusetts Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary was incorporated in 1827 for the purpose Of gratuitously treating diseases Of the eye and ear. It is the second Oldest hospital in New England. With its capacity of 215 beds for ward patients, its out-patient clinic, its special building for the treatment Of contagious ophthalmia, its pathological building, and its Nurses' Home, it is the largest hospital for diseases of the eye and ear in the world. Ever since it was started, it has given the best treatment to poor people, many Of whom without its aid would have been unable to gain a livelihood. Its work has increased year after year, as the population Of the City and State and other New England States has increased. The Board Of Managers making this report feel that the institution at the present time, with its capacity for carrying on a great charitable work, should be more than ever before an Object Of interest to the people Of the State and City.
