Foamed asphalt technology has been in existence for 30 years but is not well known by many Alberta municipalities. This project involved the construction of a 310m length of arterial roadway in Lethbridge using foamed asphalt stabilized granular base (FASGB) to demonstrate the technology, evaluate the performance of the structure, and determine its utility. The constructed length was divided into five test sections of varying cross-section, with the asphalt concrete (130mm) and subgrade (clayey, sandy silt) layers common to each section. Project work included design, construction, quality assurance, performance monitoring, economic analysis, and derivation of the residential road perspective. Construction work was carried out in August and September 1992. Performance monitoring continued for one year after construction completion.
