This paper reviews the debate about trade & culture in the context of the film industry. It begins with an overview of Canadian and US views about culture. Part 2 reviews the international environment of the film industry: the global domination of US film companies, the implications of trade & investment agreements for the film industry, and other challenges of globalization (technological, commercial) & how to meet these challenges. Part 3 contrasts two distinct industries facing different global realities: the Canadian and US film industries. The comparison covers support measures, production, distribution, exhibition, industry structure, and policy issues.
