There has been increased concern regarding health effects of extremely low frequency ELF (1-300 Hz) electric and magnetic fields, particularly of those produced by power lines. In response to this concern, a working group representing labour, utility companies, academia, and federal and provincial governments was formed in 1986 to assess the existence and scope of health effects of electric and magentic fields related to the generation and use of electricity, to identify gaps in knowledge, to foster research to fill these gaps, and to educate the public on the state of scientific understanding. This document was prepared to educate the public regarding health effects of exposure to electric and magnetic fields at 60 Hz. Reports on the Working Group's activities, conclusions and recommendations are also included.
