Heretic is the seventh of our “one-shot” anthologies, following Sanctuary, Colony, Nourishment, Outsiders, Mutation, and Legacy. Each title is the product of an intense, one-day period of writing and editing by a team of authors currently residing (mostly) in Toronto. Heretic has nearly forty stories, and just over 120,000 words—all of them written and edited in a 24-hour period!—making this the largest one-shot anthology yet. The one-shot anthology is radically different from most fiction anthologies, which typically take around a year to produce. At just 24 hours, we are working over 300 times faster to get to the finish line. For this reason, you are not seeing the polished prose of a standard book; instead, the one-shot anthology gives a rare window into the creative writing process. It is often said that most of writing is rewriting; this anthology, then, is a kind of heresy. A team of writers abandoned writerly wisdom about the importance of editing—or of letting a manuscript sit for a few weeks before taking another crack at it—and combined their efforts to prove that we can, in fact, write 39 stories and 120,000 words in just 24 hours!
