The Beaufort Environmental Monitoring Project was initiated in 1983 by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and Environment Canada to provide the technical basis for design, operation and evaluation of a comprehensive and defensible environmental research and monitoring program to accompany hydrocarbon development in the Beaufort Sea, relative to the regulatory responsibilities of the two departments. 1987-88 represents the 5th year of the project and involved a review of relevant studies initiated or completed since the last workshops in March 1987, preparation of project overviews describing the purpose of these investigations and their relationship to existing hypotheses, and evaluation of the overall status of knowledge regarding each hypothesis. A short description is given of each project, along with the principal investigator, affiliation, funding source, expected completion date, and relevance to the overall project.
