The production of new materials, extensively used in the design and servicing of complex systems and structures, has opened a vast area of research requiring innovative tools to solve very complex problems. Multifield theories in continuum mechanics provide such tools and are a fruitful area of investigation for improving our understanding of new materials that are continuously produced by industrial manufacturing. This text examines the impact of material substructures on the mechanical behaviour of solids and structures.
