What do we mean when we ask people, "Where are you from?" Here, the question is often followed by, "No, I mean where are you really from-originally?" Treated with suspicion, the question is sometimes answered with and aggrieved, "I'm Canadian- just like you." Although question occasionally implies the notion that "real" Canadians are descendants of nineteenth-century pioneers.
