Partnerships using community-based participatory research approaches may encounter situations where conventional research methods feel uncomfortable or are inappropriate. We describe an example of how allowing space for a research disruption led to the development of a qualitative analysis method that fit the needs of our partnership. We discuss the conditions that prompted the method development and the process by which we developed a method for respectfully analyzing story data, including the ways that we integrated cultural concepts with examples from literature. We describe the experience of navigating the research cloud and explain how the process affected the individuals within the partnership and the partnership itself. We hope that our experience can offer other researchers an example of how they might address methodological issues in research and engage with culture to create new avenues for research.
