I Had a Job I Liked. Once. explores ideas of justice and the law, innocence and experience, and social hierarchies. Set in a police station, the action centres on the interrogation of a young man accused of a crime involving a beautiful and wealthy teenage girl. The events leading up to the incident unfold in flashbacks as the boy tells his story to the interrogating officer, a by-the-book sergeant. The focus of the play is the struggle that arises in an individual when his notion of justice conflicts with the law. Whereas this theme is often represented by some "clear good" being thwarted by an oppressive law, this play moves in a much murkier realm, giving all the characters their say, and leaving the reader to struggle with the justice or the injustice of the situation.
