John-Joseph Delaney has travelled home from Australia to Liverpool, a city that had once been a friend and was now a stranger. He is searching for his first love, Abby, and eventually tracks down her daughter Michelle, who agrees to take him to see her mother. Abby is terminally ill but is clearly delighted to see 'her' JonJo again, even after 40 years. John-Joseph still longs to know why they parted all those years ago, but Abby has a secret she still can't bring herself to divulge.
