On the basis of personal experience tempered in the field, the contributors to this volume document the full dimension of the health and food crisis which Bangladesh faced—both during the cyclone disaster of 1970, the period of civil strife in 1971, and the post-war relief and rehabilitation effort in 1972. Throughout, the authors suggest some of the basic lessons which the international community must and can learn from the Bangladesh disaster. I am confident that this volume of essays will contribute to a better understanding of some of the fundamental 'people problems' which will demand the attention of the international community in the coming decades.
