The poems of "The Literal World" -- the premier book commissioned from the new press Atelos -- play off various American genres: Protestant sermons (and the idea of a lost paradise), Lewis and Clark's journals of exploration, and the Western among them, each formative narratives, accounts of an America its fathers and mothers' sought to create. As a private parallel to this public view, Day concludes the book with "Narratives from the Crib, " an intimate but wry, tender but individualistic account by an infant of the person he or she is meant someday to be. Jean Day's works have been translated into Finnish, Swedish, Russian, French and Spanish. Cover photo-still from Jim Jarmusch's film Dead Man.
