Its central charaters are Joseph Davis, older brother of Confederacy President Jefferson Davis, and Benjhamin Montgomery, his slave and intelletural heir, who ultimately established on the lands of the former Jefferson plantation an all-black utopian community that became the third most successful cotton operatin in the entire South.
