Searching for Space is a filmic portrait of the architect Herman Hertzberger--a multi-faceted man with a strong commitment to social change, who is without a doubt one of the Netherlands' most important architects. When Hertzberger designs a house, a school or a factory, his primary concern is not the architecture itself but the life that will be lived inside it. What are the factors that have determined his style? How are his ideas reflected in his architecture? How have the buildings changed, and how will they change in the future? Does he still profess the same utopian ideals as in the past, or does he have a new, different vision of the ways in which society can be shaped? The answers to these questions are revealed in this film, which is introduced by the director Kees Hin and the architect Maarten Kloos.
