The focus of this research is to determine the extent to which students are being served by municipal transit systems versus the school bus services of school boards, and to synthesize the various approaches that have been implemented to accommodate school transportation demands and increase student ridership on the transit systems. Information for the research comes from operating data reported by member systems of the Canadian Urban Transit Association, surveys & interviews with a cross-section of transit systems, and relevant reports. Three transit/school transportation approaches are studied (fare-related, service-related, and operations-related) and two administrative arrangements are identified (informal & formal partnerships between the transit system and school board). The appendix contains a copy of the questionnaire used in the survey research.
