In his valuable Introduction to sahih Muslim the distinguished and well known scholar of Islam, Mufti A’zam of Pakistan, Mufti Rafi’ Uthmani has asserted explicity that hadith was recorded even in the times of the Prophet e. In fact, he had commanded that ahadith should be written down. So, a section of the sahabah y penned down the Prophet’s e ahadith. Sometimes, he himself dictated to them. According to Tirmidhi, he said to an ansar who complained of poor memory “Use your right hand (and write).” Tirmidhi also reports in Kitab ul-Ilal that Ibn Abbas t got his students to write down the hadith. This practice was contined down the centuries by the sahabah t and the tabi’un and their successors, so that in the third century hijrah the sihah sittah (the six authentic books of sahih hadith) were compiled. Tirmidhi ranks third among them. It has 3982 ahadith. We, at Darul-Ishaat, are honoured to present its first English translation. This book with the valuable commentary should enable us to abide by the Prophet’s e teachings in every sphere of our lives.
