A collection of documents, mainly from the archives of the Jewish community of Hamburg. Pp. cxxxiv-clv, "Antisemitismus", notes that the Hamburg city council was free of antisemitism under the Empire; it granted the Jews privileges and took a firm stand against antisemitic organizations. At the same time, the antisemitic Deutsch-Soziale Partei received 8,014 votes in Hamburg in the 1893 Reichstag elections. The Jewish community relied on the protection of the Senate and of the courts, even in the Weimar period, when there was a marked increase in antisemitic agitation. The two antisemitic parties, Deutsche Nationale Volkspartei and the NSDAP, polled about 25% of the Hamburg vote in the 1924 Reichstag elections. In 1930-32, Nazi rowdies terrorized the Jews; the authorities failed to respond to Jewish requests to intervene. Ch. 19 (pp. 1000-1073), "Antisemitismus und Abwehr des Antisemitismus", contains documents from the period 1919-January 1933, including internal community policy debates. See the index for additional material.
