With 3,000 years of history, Armenia is strategically located at the crossroads between East and West in the Caucasus. The current republic, which regained its independence in 1991, is only 1/6 of the original Armenia. Dominated by the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Persian and Russian/Soviet Empires, Armenia has a much contested and highly charged history, as evident in the debates surrounding the Armenian genocide. The author offers a balanced and readable general history of this complicated region from its origins to the present day.
