This chamber took cognizance also, in the first instance, of the affairs of the Hotel-Dieu of Paris, &c. respecting their privileges and exemptions from aids, &c. The ordinances, edicts, declarations, letters-patent, letters of creations of nobility and others, were registered in this chamber; general laws were, however, registered in the assembly of the chambers. With respect to the courts of aids generally, they heard appeals from the decisions of the elections, the greniers a sel, the judges of the salt depots, the judges of the traitts or the masters of the ports, the judges of the marques defer, &c. These courts had also, like other sovereign courts, the right to make regulations for the government of their own corps, &c.; and they also had the power of correcting their own officers, and the treasurers, receivers, collectors and clerks, in respect of the duties which they had to perform. The principal subordinate tribunals, from which appeals lay to the courts of aids, were the elections, the greniers n sel, and the bureaux des traites.
