
Set during the turbulent period when Portugal and its colonies were subject to Spanish rule due to the lack of heirs to ascend to the throne, nobleman Don Antõnio de Mariz establishes himself and his family in a deserted inland region a few days travel from Rio. There he builds a castle for protection from the outside forces that plot against him. Among his loyal servants is Peri, a Guarani Indian who deserts his own people to be with Mariz. Peri uncovers a deadly plot against the household of his friend and master and attempts to thwart the coup.
