GRENVILLE'S DIARY: ENTITLED, BY HIMSELF, "SOME ACCOUNT OF THE MEMORABLE TRANSACTIONS SINCE THE DEATH OF LOED EGEEMONT."1 Mr. Grenville went to Wotton, on Wednesday the 3rd of August, 1763. The King had, about a fortnight before this, declared his intention of endeavouring to strengthen his government by proposing to Lord Hardwicke to make him President, and by giving an office to the Duke of Newcastle, contrary to the positive and repeated advice of Lord Halifax, Lord Egremont, and Mr. Grenville. The King, however, gave his orders to Lord Egremont to speak to Lord Hardwicke, who at once rejected the offer, and said they would never come into office, but as a party and upon a plan concerted with Mr. Pitt and the great Whig Lords, as had been practised in the late King's time. That King William had been forced to a change of Ministry, so had King George the Second, who had thanked him, Lord Hardwicke, for advising him to it. i 1 This Narrative, or Diary, is chiefly in the handwriting of Mrs. Grenville, with occasional corrections and additions by Mr. Grenville. When Lord Hardwicke's answer was reported to the King, he desired ten days to consider upon what he should think best to do, solemnly promising that if this did not take effect, he would lay aside all thoughts of it, and strengthen the hands of his three Ministers, and accordingly his two Secretaries of State spoke to him upon common business only, and Mr. Grenville went out of town.
