A major public commission by artist Nathan Coley was launched in the Essex seaside town of Jaywick on 22 November 2008. This is the first in a series of ambitious public projects curated by Jes Fernie, firstsite Associate, to take place annually in the region. 66 Brooklands Gardens (the title of the work) is a temporary sculpture, two years in the making, which formally references the extraordinary architectural context in which it is situated. The sculpture has been visited by angels (from the United Reform Church who set up their stall in the adjacent garage over Christmas), councillors, children, local residents, artists, teachers, journalists, coach loads of tourists from London and curators from across the UK. It has raised the profile of the area, and has provided a catalyst for discussions concerning the conditions of the road and lighting in Brooklands.
