In the discussion regarding the progress of democratization and the evaluation of countries based on a democratic index, “little experiences” of democracy are often overlooked. This record synthesizes the democratic experiences from India, Brazil, and South Africa by looking at democratic accountability from the perspectives of intermediaries, organizations, associations, and citizen leaders who prepare, support, and facilitate citizen action. Based on seven case studies from the three countries, it also delves deeper into the complexities of participation, forms of intermediation, interface between citizens and state, dilemmas of citizen leaders, and extent of impact on citizens’ lives. This book would be valuable to researchers, students, development practitioners, government officers, community-based organizations, and donor agencies.
