Jim Black has worked as a bartender, journalist, translator, and freelance writer, and has traveled extensively. He lived for eight years in New York City and eight years in Nicaragua during the height of that country’s civil war. In Nicaragua, he worked in the Presidential Press Department of the Sandanista government in that nation’s version of the White House. He stayed on after the war and worked for the bi-lingual newspaper, Barricada Internacional. His next job however would be his most important; that of a single parent to his six-year-old son, whom he brought to the United States and a different country, culture, and language. He now resides in his native State of Wisconsin with his wife Eileen. He is a graduate of UW-Stevens Point. Just Call me a Gardener is only one of many essays within this book and will not teach you how to raise plants. But it may raise your awareness, and appreciation of, the simple treasures, pleasures, and conditions we all have in common.
