In this anthology, we hope to prove that contemporary nature writing is by no means monocultural or monoform. Some of the pieces offer visions for the future; some offer alternative realities; some are examinations of the present and its possibilities for change or difference; others are shear leaps of the imagination. All of them, however, are formally memorable in their use of convention, voice, perspective, ambiguity, storytelling, structure, or image. In their often subtle points of difference, they press the reader to imagine alternatives and possibilities, different ways of thinking and being in the world. The contrast between these elements encourages us to meet the strangeness of each one with a sensitivity to the contours of its world. -- Pages 11-12.
