Mariposa B1-09 chronicles Michael Lin's vibrant architectural intervention of the same name at Museo Jumex, Mexico City, from February 4 to May 26, 2020. The book is divided into two halves, each with two parts-folded, you could say, like the floral tablecloths from which Lin drew his inspiration. The first half comprises the artist's extensive research into the Mexican paint manufacturer Comex, including pages from its yearly catalogs ("Strips") and composition tests from its laboratory ("Linetas"). These "Strips" are excerpted from Comex's yearly ColorLife brochures, which features photographs of fashion, food, furniture, and architecture and the paint swatches derived from the hues in the images. The "Linetas," meanwhile, are gathered from Comex's factory, where a machine applies a precise quantity of paint to a card and analyzes it with a calorimetric scanner to ensure consistency. Included here are tests for all the colors used in Mariposa B1-09.The book's second half documents Lin's 1,300 square meter installation with increasingly distant aerial images that demonstrate its engagement with the building and its surrounds ("Views") and photographs of each individual wooden piece ("Panels") after the work's deinstallation.
