A collection of essays on the theme of how East Europeans, Yugoslavs, and specifically Serbs have coped with the great transformation from agricultural to industrial society. The first group of essays are experiments in large-scale explanation which concern all of Eastern Europe except Poland. The essays in part two analyze key moments in the creation and eventual destruction of Yugoslavia.
