"Increasing demand for preservation of the environment, conservation of resources, and a sustainable society led to the publication of two types of ISO 14000 standards by ISO: management oriented and product oriented. The ISO 14000 product oriented standards include Environmental Labels and Declaration, Life Cycle Assessment and Design for Environment. These standards are intended to be applicable to assess environmental performance of products and services, and to provide guidance on improving their environmental performance. As a result these standards may serve as norms for environmental consideration of products and services in international trade. This implies that the standards have the potential to become technical facilitators as well as barriers to trade"--P. i.
