This study analyses the causes and consequences of the adoption of Information Technology (IT) in two prominent Indian manufacturing sectors, namely, (i) electrical and electronic goods and (ii) garments. The findings of the study suggest that relatively larger firms, managed by technically qualified and quality-conscious entrepreneurs, have adopted more advanced IT tools in the electrical and electronic goods manufacturing sector. The adoption of advanced IT tools has enabled firms to take advantage of flexibility in designs and product mix, and constitutes a technological paradigm shift comparable with the paradigm shift that occurred, for example, as a result of the introduction of valve technology and solid state technology.
