One of the leading trends in GIS practice is the use of geospatial and geostatistical techniques in the analysis and modeling of GIS and remotely sensed data. Geospatial techniques are used to analyze known information, while geostatistics is used to project unknown variables. The current trend is the integration of these techniques through the use of fractals and other advanced modeling algorithms, as evidenced by the forthcoming release of ESRI's Geostatistical Analyst extension for ArcInfo 8.
