Author Description

In the seaside town of Ilfracombe, many of the homes have taken in evacuee children, known locally as Vackies. They have come from the cities to escape the Blitz, but Ilfracombe too is not without its dangers. On the hill above the harbour stands the old chapel, boarded up and in ruins. It used to serve as a lighthouse, but now it is wartime and the lantern no longer burns. The path to the chapel is treacherous and overgrown. lt is definitely out of bounds, but John Lea and Murray Pierce, two of the Vackies, decide to explore....
