The country is no longer being run by the elected government but by a shadow group called The Council. Exploiting the apathy of the people, they’ve made edicts and taken over responsibility for everything from the country’s food supply to the national education system. Until the Council is able to change the law of the land to grant them full legal power, people are controlled via intimidation, fines, and harassment. They claim it’s for the greater good – we must all give way to altruism. The church is tolerated but irrelevant in the Council’s world. The Council believes in science and ensures it is held as the only Holy Grail within the school system, teaching its followers to forgo faith and embrace technology. Each child’s potential is evaluated and their career decided for them without input from them or their parents. One family has already had their two oldest children sent off to specialized schools but when the Council comes for their youngest children, not yet teenagers, the parents must make a terrible choice. If they run, they risk losing their eldest son entirely but to stay means losing their youngest children to the system, and possibly their own lives. Defying the Council is dangerous. Can they disappear without being noticed? Is there really a place where they can go and live in freedom? What will happen if the Council finds them? It’s something a simple Midwest farmer never thought he’d have to face in this land of promise. Saving his family is one thing – is too late to save his country?
