Lonely Girl is a true, modern replay of a classic Biblical tale found in the New Testament, in the Book of John, called "The Story of a Samaritan Woman." In the classic, the reader is afforded limited insight into the travails of this lone, scandalous woman. In the case of this modern retake-presumed to be a contemporary parallel of the classic-the main character's story is unveiled in raw, unfiltered, and considerable length and detail. Readers are invited to share in exploring the depths and perils of a past marred by absence and rejection-that is, loneliness-and how that coalesced together with a "silent" culture, sets the stage for shame and humiliation to be the dominant forces in the life of "Lonely Girl." The primary character of the book is the daughter and member of a distinctly Asian, middle-class, conservative, and Christian household and community. Beginning with the loss of her virginity at the age of 17 - followed by her violent exclusion from the church thereafter - Lonely Girl embarks on a quest around The World to find saving grace. In so doing, her secret aspiration becomes finding a husband, starting first with a Jewish boy, to live as his submissive wife, desiring all forms of unhealthy attachment, while her distinctly more "White" eyes as compared to her Korean peers are worked to her benefit in these circles. All throughout, she assumes a posture of submission and pursues her worldly lovers to act as her savior - so is the synopsis and concept behind the book. The girl then meets a world - and much older and experienced - Swedish businessman who is 23 years her senior who she is determined to marry, when a sudden request and an ensuing discovery threatens to destroy her dream.
