This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Optimal Performance of Civil Infrastructure Systems, held in Portland, Oregon, April 12, 1997. The 16 state-of-the-art, peer-reviewed papers, intended for both academics and practitioners, presents an integrated view of recent developments in the field of optimal performance of civil infrastructure systems (CIS) in the United States, Europe (Denmark and Italy), and Japan. The papers focus on the critical importance of concepts and methods of optimization in both the design of new facilities and replacement, repair and retrofit of existing ones.
