In this, the first generalized history of sport in Canada, the authors draw on their own research to discuss such topics as sport in nineteenth century Montreal; sport as a diversion for the elite in nineteenth century Toronto; three early sport celebrities--Louis Rubenstein, Ned Hanlan, and Louis Cyr; sport and physical education in schools and universities and the several leaders in these fields who had great influence on organized sport; sport between the wars; sport and technological change; women in sports; sports journalism; Canada at the Olympic Games; and the federal government's involvement in sport.
