From Library Journal This volume surveys Australian poetry and prose from the end of the 18th century to the present. It is intended to represent its range and to document its continuity. It contains samples from early writers such as Henry Lawson and Henry Handel Richardson (Ethel F. Robertson) to modern writers more familiar to Americans, such as Shirley Hazzard and David Malouf. The anthology is divided into four sections, each preceded by a short commentary. The works are presented chronologically within the sections and include biographical data about the writer. There is an index of titles and authors. No other critical apparatus is provided. This volume will be most useful when accompanied on the shelf by the Oxford History of Australian Literature. Recommended for large literature collections. Michael J. Esposito, formerly with the Special Libraries Association, New YorkCopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.
