A cultural history of the American notion of cleanliness: its origins, motivations, and development through the mid 19th century. The origins are European, primarily English; the motivations are the usual - morality, religion, sexuality - development was driven by technological and medial advances, as well as contact with alien cultures, including indigenous populations and slaves.
