Providing an analysis of recent developments in social policy in New Zealand, this book takes a long hard look at the welfare state, both from the point of view of the kinds of help provided, and its effects on those who receive it. The three traditional alternatives (classic liberal, institutional, and Marxist/socialist) are considered, along with some new developments, in the light of the challenges provided by feminists and Maori during the 1980s.
