Left almost alone in the world when her mother marries a rich American, Laura Flanagan leaves Ireland to go to Australia, hoping to build a new life there. During the long-haul flight to Australia, she meets Declan Martin, a young horseman bringing the Irish champion, Lancelot's Pride, to have a crack at the Melbourne Cup. But when Laura tells him she must find an Australian husband in order to live there, Declan doesn't handle it well.
