Lucy starts her new life with her uncle in Cornwall, unaware that she will stumble on some dangerous secrets. Innocently helping a poor family, she becomes enmeshed in treachery and murder, and discovers that her uncle is the leader of a smuggling gang. Lucy is attracted to Marcus Trenarren, a local landowner, but suspects he may also be a smuggler. It is only when her own life is in danger that she finds where her true happiness lies.
