The sixties and seventies saw a wide-ranging debate on the growth of capitalist production in Indian agriculture, which soon became known as "the mode of production" debate. This book brings together a selection of the articles which constituted the corpus of the debate. The contributions illuminate the basic conceptual issues behind the debate: what is agricultural "capitalism", particularly in an ex-colonial country; how are "feudalism" and "semi-feudalism" to be conceptualized; in what way do landlord-tenant relations constrain productive development and how do they shape the contours of capitalist accumulation?
