This book re-evaluates the work of one of the most interesting and gifted of the early Indian nationalists, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay. Sudipta Kaviraj rejects the traditional view that Bankim was a conservative, arguing rather that we require a different and more complex description of the historical significance of his art.
