Hexokinase D (EC 2.7.1.1, often called "glucokinase") is the characteristic isoenzyme of hexokinase in the liver, and is responsible for glucose phosphorylation in hepatocytes. This volume contains eight chapters: diet and carbohydrate utilization--"glucokinase," an adaptive enzyme; glucokinase or hexokinase?; kinetic and structural properties of hepatic hexokinase D, a monomeric cooperative enzyme; tissue and cellular distribution of hexokinase D; pancreatic and liver hexokinase D--one gene two proteins; instantaneous regulation; short-term regulation--the regulatory protein; and control of gene expression.
