Author Description

In attempting give depth and reality to the representation of everyday lives of women in Asia, these papers work against two, almost oppositional, representations of Asian women. The first common representation is of victims child prostitutes, battered maids and mail-order brides and the second is the imagined subversive. Discarding these assumptions, the contributors assess the actual possibilities for and realizations of agency for women in various Asian cultures. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
